Some people spend their teenage years dreaming about driving a Porsche. Kyle Baran spent his driving them. Lots of them.
GT2 RS? Check. 918 Spyder? Check. A seemingly endless parade of 911s including the coveted S/T, Cayennes, and other machines wearing the famous crest? Absolutely.
By age 21, Kyle estimates he'd logged roughly 17,000 miles behind the wheel of Porsches through his work at dealerships.
Not bad for a guy whose career began washing cars.
But as I discovered during our conversation for Behind the Crest, Kyle's story isn't really about horsepower, expensive cars, or even that unmistakable Stuttgart engineering. It's about discovering a passion, finding a community, and figuring out how to build a life around something you genuinely love.
And, of course, buying a rather unusual Porsche along the way.
From Motor City to Porsche Country
Growing up in the Detroit area, Kyle was surrounded by automotive culture. Cars were part of everyday life, but Porsche wasn't necessarily his first obsession.
That changed when a high school friend landed a job at Porsche Motor City.
Seeing the incredible cars coming through the dealership sparked Kyle's curiosity. When Porsche Detroit North opened closer to home, he saw an opportunity and landed a job as a porter at just 19 years old.
For most teenagers, being handed the keys to a six-figure sports car would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
For Kyle, it became another Tuesday.
His responsibilities included washing, preparing, moving, and valeting customer vehicles. And while those duties might not sound particularly glamorous, the cars certainly were.
More importantly, Kyle was getting an education that no classroom could replicate.
He experienced firsthand what makes these cars special, how dealerships treat their customers, and why Porsche ownership often becomes something much more personal than a simple transaction.
"I wasn't in love with Porsche when I started," Kyle admitted. But after spending time around the cars and the people who own them, that changed.
Today, he describes himself as obsessed.
I'd say that's a fairly accurate diagnosis.
The Cayenne That Checked Every Box
When Kyle moved to Grand Rapids to study photography at Kendall College of Art and Design, he continued working with the brand, joining Porsche Grand Rapids.
Meanwhile, his longtime family hand-me-down vehicle was approaching retirement from the family transportation program.
His mother had a fairly reasonable request: perhaps it was time for Kyle to start covering his own automotive expenses.
And what does a financially responsible 21-year-old Porsche enthusiast do when faced with that situation?
Naturally, he buys a V8-powered German performance SUV.
But this wasn't just any Cayenne.
Kyle discovered a 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS (957) listed at Porsche Novi, finished in an uncommon exterior Marine Blue Metallic with a distinctive Slate and Stone Grey interior featuring leather and Alcantara.
It had the personality, performance, and practicality he wanted. Better yet, it fit his budget.
He arranged a test drive, and the rest happened quickly.
There was something especially meaningful about arriving at the dealership as a customer rather than an employee.
Kyle remembers pulling up and seeing the Cayenne waiting in the service lane, engine running and ready for his arrival.
After spending years preparing cars for other people, suddenly he was the person on the receiving end.
The dealership even welcomed him with a personalized message on its display screen.
For Kyle, the entire experience reinforced something he'd already learned from working around the brand: Porsche understands that buying one of these cars is often an emotional milestone.
And now he had experienced it himself.
Seven Previous Owners? No Problem. Well, Almost.
Of course, purchasing an older performance SUV comes with a few realities.
Kyle's Cayenne had seven previous owners.
That's enough ownership history to make some buyers reach for the nearest exit.
But Kyle took a practical approach, reviewing its maintenance records and making sure the major work had been addressed.
He also had the vehicle inspected and sought opinions from technicians familiar with the model.
The result? A Cayenne he felt confident bringing home.
Has ownership been completely free of surprises? Not quite.
Kyle has noticed some noise from the driveshaft carrier bushing under hard acceleration, and routine maintenance remains on the calendar.
Fortunately, working at a Porsche dealership has its advantages.
As Kyle joked, sometimes all you need is a skilled technician, the necessary parts, and a couple of Red Bulls.
It's an approach I can appreciate.
Anyone who's owned an aging European performance car understands that the relationship occasionally involves spending money on things that don't make the car any faster.
But that's part of the experience.
The key is buying intelligently, staying ahead of maintenance, and remembering why you wanted the car in the first place.
Finding His People in the PCA
One of my favorite parts of Kyle's story came after he purchased the Cayenne.
He joined the Porsche Club of America in May, just a month after bringing his GTS home.
His first event was a West Michigan PCA drive beginning near Kalamazoo and winding through the beautiful countryside of Southwest Michigan toward the lake.
It was a memorable introduction.
Kyle arrived surrounded by 911s, Cayennes, and other Porsches, some worth considerably more than his own.
And, being one of the younger members, he admitted feeling a little intimidated.
Would he fit in? Would anyone care about his older Cayenne? Would he be taken seriously?
Those concerns disappeared almost immediately.
Everyone welcomed him.
Nobody seemed particularly interested in how much he'd spent on his Porsche, how old he was, or whether his vehicle was the fastest one in the parking lot.
They were simply happy he was there.
As Kyle explained, the club provides something increasingly valuable: a place to belong.
He described that sense of community as a "third space"—somewhere outside the usual demands of work and everyday life where people can connect over a shared passion.
And when that third space happens to be behind the wheel of a Porsche, all the better.
That philosophy is exactly why I started Behind the Crest.
The cars bring us together, but the people make the experience memorable.
More Than a Car Guy: The Artist Behind the Lens
Kyle isn't just interested in driving beautiful cars.
He wants to capture them.
Currently studying photography at Kendall College of Art and Design, Kyle hopes to build a career in commercial automotive photography.
He's already combining his creative interests with his work at Porsche Grand Rapids, taking photographs for dealership activities and exploring opportunities in marketing.
His interests extend beyond polished showroom images.
Kyle particularly enjoys film photography and candid moments—the kinds of photographs that capture the feeling of an experience rather than simply documenting a vehicle.
That's an important distinction.
Anyone can take a photograph of a parked Porsche.
But capturing the excitement of a road trip, the friendship between owners, or the atmosphere of a gathering requires a different eye.
During our conversation, we discussed how West Michigan PCA could better document its drives and events through photography and short-form video.
After all, Michigan has some spectacular driving roads, beautiful scenery, and an enthusiastic Porsche community.
Sometimes the best way to encourage someone to join the fun is simply to show them what they're missing.
Kyle was enthusiastic about the idea.
And I suspect we'll be seeing more of his work in the future.

The Dream Garage Is Still Under Construction
Naturally, I had to ask Kyle the question every Porsche enthusiast loves answering:
What's next?
His answer wasn't limited to one car.
A manual 991-generation Carrera appeals to him, particularly as something he could drive regularly—even through a Michigan winter.
He also loves the idea of a 911 Carrera GTS, but he's open to taking an entirely different direction with a Taycan Cross Turismo or Panamera.
And then there are the dream cars.
Kyle has a particular affection for the 993 Carrera 4S and the 911 Speedster.
In fact, when our conversation turned to the newer open-top GT3 concept, Kyle admitted that his heart still belongs to the classic Speedster silhouette.
The distinctive body lines, the rear deck humps, the sense of occasion—those are the details that speak to him.
I can't argue with that.
Of course, as every Porsche owner knows, the dream garage is rarely finished.
There's always another configuration, another color, another engine, or another road waiting to be discovered.
The Future of Porsche, According to the Next Generation
Our conversation also explored the direction Porsche is taking as a brand.
Kyle has driven a wide variety of newer models, including electric vehicles, and he has a refreshingly open-minded perspective.
He appreciates the technology and performance of Porsche's electric lineup, particularly the responsiveness and surprising capabilities of the Macan Electric.
But he also believes Porsche needs to maintain a connection to the internal-combustion vehicles that helped establish its identity.
For Kyle, the future doesn't have to be exclusively electric or exclusively gasoline-powered.
It needs to remain unmistakably Porsche.
And that means preserving the emotion, character, and driver engagement that make these cars special.
It's an interesting perspective from someone who has grown up during one of the most significant transitions in automotive history.
He appreciates the old-school experience of an air-cooled 911 while remaining excited about what electric performance vehicles might become.
There's room in his automotive world for both.
Advice for Your First Porsche? Buy the Experience, Not the Badge.
Toward the end of our conversation, I asked Kyle what advice he'd give someone considering their first Porsche.
His answer was thoughtful, particularly coming from someone who purchased his first at 21.
Start by understanding what you actually need.
Do you want a sports car? A daily driver? A practical SUV? Something to restore?
Then determine what you can comfortably afford—not just the purchase price, but the ownership experience.
Explore your options, review maintenance records, arrange inspections, and don't stretch yourself financially to the point where owning the car becomes stressful.
Because the goal isn't simply to acquire a Porsche.
It's to enjoy it.
And when it comes to joining the PCA, Kyle's advice is even simpler.
Just do it.
You don't need the newest 911, a GT3, or a six-figure collection.
You just need an appreciation for the cars and a willingness to connect with the people who love them.
The Best Part of the Crest Isn't on the Hood
What struck me most about Kyle wasn't his age, the number of incredible cars he's driven, or even his rare Cayenne GTS.
It was his enthusiasm.
At 21, he's already discovered something that takes many people decades to figure out: life becomes a lot more interesting when you surround yourself with people and experiences you're passionate about.
He's building his education, career, friendships, and creative interests around the automotive world.
And he's doing it with curiosity, humility, and a genuine appreciation for the people he meets along the way.
As Kyle put it during our conversation, as long as he gets to spend his life around cool cars and cool people, he'll be happy.
That's a pretty good philosophy.
And whether he's photographing the next PCA event, exploring Michigan's back roads in his Cayenne, or eventually parking that dream 993 Carrera 4S in his garage, something tells me Kyle is just getting started.
Because behind every crest, there's a story. And Kyle Baran's is one worth following.
