The person behind the camera—and behind the crest.
Mel Kotlyar is the creator of Behind the Crest and a member of the Porsche Club of America’s Western Michigan Region. A lifelong automotive enthusiast and owner of a Seal Grey 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Mel created Behind the Crest to document the people, cars, and personal journeys that give the Porsche community its meaning.
Through interviews, films, and feature articles, he shares stories that might otherwise go untold—celebrating the belief that a meaningful Porsche journey matters more than owning a rare or expensive car.
“The cars bring us together. The people and their stories are what stay with us.”
Built for the journey
Mel’s favorite adventures are shared with his wife and best travel partner, Kate. Together they have turned Porsche ownership into a reason to explore new roads, meet new people, and collect the kind of memories that cannot be measured by mileage alone.
That same spirit shapes Behind the Crest: curious, welcoming, and focused on the human story behind every car.
